Gain a competitive advantage.
Climate change is one of the most important issues of our time.
Scientists generally agree that we need to cut emissions of greenhouse gases by 40% in this decade, to stand any chance of keeping global temperatures below 1.50C.
Businesses across the UK are starting to think seriously about how they can contribute to reducing greenhouse gases and how they can achieve Net Zero. Achieving carbon neutrality is not easy though, particularly if the company or oganisation doesn’t have clear achievement pathways identified.
A new International Standard was developed in 2023 that sets out requirements for organisations wishing to achieve carbon neutrality. The standard is designed to work with existing ISO standards, such as 9001, 45001 and 14001.
The new standard, ISO 14068, can be used by organisations large and small, in any sector. The standard requires that all greenhouse gases are considered and that full value chain or life cycle approach to GHG emissions is used where possible.
Organisations using the standard will benefit in two ways; internally, through having a clear guide on best practice in reaching carbon neutrality, and externally, by demonstrating compliance with a rigorous standard on carbon neutrality.
As a carbon neutral business, companies will have a competitive advantage when engaging with staff and stakeholders. A recent survey suggests that 42% of people in the UK want to work for an organisation that has a positive impact on the world.
Becoming carbon neutral will provide new opportunities to engage with potential and existing customers and the community. Carbon Emissions Reporting is becoming a requirement for many companies, particularly when tendering for contracts.
